If you have ever shot a group that walked left with broadheads and stayed centered with field points, you already know why tuning matters. A bow that is "close enough" is fine at 20 yards on a foam block. It is not fine at 48 yards, quartering away, in a canyon, on the one shot you get all season.

This is what a full bow tune actually includes, what it fixes, and how to know when yours needs one. Montana Precision Archery is a bow shop and indoor range in Kalispell, Montana, opening October 15, 2026, and this is the process our bench is built around.

The short answer

A full bow tune is a sequence, not a single adjustment: verify draw length and weight, time and synchronize the cams, set centershot and nock height, paper tune, bare shaft tune, then verify that broadheads and field points impact together at hunting distance. A bow is not tuned until that last step passes. Most bows need a tune once a year and any time a component changes. What "tuning" actually means

Tuning is not one adjustment. It is a sequence, and the order matters. Every step depends on the one before it, which is why a rushed tune tends to come apart a month later.

The goal is simple to say and hard to do: get the arrow leaving the bow perfectly straight, with no oscillation the fletching has to correct. When that happens, broadheads fly like field points, groups tighten at distance, and your bow stops being a variable.

1. Fit before function

Draw length and draw weight get checked first, because everything downstream is measured against them. A draw length half an inch too long will fight you forever, and no amount of rest adjustment fixes it. If the bow does not fit the shooter, the bow cannot be tuned to the shooter.

2. Cam timing and synchronization

On a modern two-cam bow, both cams need to hit the stops together and roll over at the same moment. Out-of-time cams produce inconsistent nock travel, which shows up as unexplained vertical flyers that no sight adjustment will fix. Timing is checked at the press, corrected with cable twists, and re-verified at full draw.

3. Centershot and rest position

The rest gets set so the arrow leaves the bow on the intended line, both horizontally and vertically. This is the starting point, not the finish line. Centershot is where tuning begins, and paper will tell you how far off the starting number really was.

4. Nock height and level nock travel

Nock height controls vertical arrow flight. Set it wrong and you get a tail-high or tail-low tear that people often misdiagnose as a form problem or a bad arrow spine.

5. Paper tuning

Shooting through paper shows the arrow's attitude the instant it leaves the string. A bullet hole means the arrow is leaving straight. A tear tells you which direction it is fishtailing or porpoising, and the fix follows from the tear.

Paper is a diagnostic, not a trophy. A bow can paper-tune clean and still be under-spined for the setup, which is why paper is a checkpoint rather than the finish.

6. Bare shaft tuning

This is where honest tuning happens. Shooting an unfletched arrow next to fletched arrows at distance removes the fletching's ability to cover mistakes. If the bare shaft impacts with the group, the arrow is genuinely leaving the bow straight. If it lands six inches out at 20 yards, something upstream is wrong, and paper missed it.

Bare shaft results also surface arrow spine problems that no rest adjustment can solve. Sometimes the correct answer is a different arrow, not a different setting.

7. Broadhead verification

This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the step that decides your season. Fixed-blade broadheads are steerable planes on the front of your arrow, and they amplify any tuning error that field points hide. A bow is not finished until broadheads and field points impact together at hunting distance.

If they do not, the fix is tuning, not sight adjustment. Moving your pins to chase broadheads means your bow is aimed correctly for exactly one arrow and wrong for the rest.

Signs your bow needs a tune

  • Broadheads and field points do not hit together
  • Groups open up past 40 yards while 20 yards looks fine
  • Unexplained vertical flyers with a consistent anchor
  • Visible arrow wobble downrange, or noisy, "loud" arrow flight
  • Your fletching is scuffing the rest or the riser
  • Peep rotation has changed, or the string has visible fuzz, serving separation, or peep creep
  • You changed anything: arrows, rest, string, sight, draw weight, release, or the bow spent a season in a truck

How often should a bow be tuned?

Once a year at minimum, ideally in late summer before archery season, plus any time a component changes. Strings and cables are the quiet culprit. They stretch and settle most in their first few hundred shots, then continue creeping with heat, humidity, and time. A bow tuned in March has usually moved by September.

Montana adds its own variable. A bow that lives in a truck through 90-degree August afternoons and 20-degree October mornings is not the same bow all season.

What to bring

Bring the bow the way you actually shoot it, including your release, your quiver, your sight, and the exact arrows and broadheads you plan to hunt with. Tuning to a set of practice arrows and then hunting with different ones undoes the work. If you have been fighting a specific problem, tell us what it looks like on target. The tear pattern in your groups is diagnostic information.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a bow tune take?

It depends entirely on what the bow needs. A healthy setup that just needs verification is a different job than a bow with cam timing issues, a worn string, and an arrow spine mismatch. We will tell you what we find before we start on anything beyond the tune you came in for.

Do I need to be there for the tune?

For a real tune, yes, at least for part of it. Bare shaft and broadhead verification require the bow to be shot by the person who will hunt with it. A bench-only tune is tuned to the bench, not to you.

Can you tune a bow you did not sell?

Yes. Bring in whatever you shoot.

Does a new bow need tuning?

Usually, yes. A bow set up on a factory spec sheet is set up for an average shooter with average arrows. It is a starting point, not a finished tune, and new strings settle within the first few hundred shots.

Will tuning fix my accuracy?

Tuning removes the equipment from the equation. That is not the same as fixing form, but it is the prerequisite. You cannot diagnose a shooting problem on a bow that is lying to you.
